Vernon Harvey Voth
Vernon Harvey Voth, 84, has peacefully passed away on December 15, 2022 with his wife and daughter at his side after a gallant 26-month battle against cancer. He is survived by the Love of His Life, Alice (Thiessen), his wife of 61 years; his daughter Wendy (John Janzen); his grandchildren Martin, Matthew and Heather; his brother Gordon (Genevieve) and sister Myrna (Ken Goertzen) and their families. He was a devoted husband, loving father, and proud grandfather.
Vern was predeceased by his daughter Nancy (2008), sister Carol (1968), father Henry (2004), and mother Linda (2017).
Born in May on Friday the 13th, 1938, in Herbert, Saskatchewan, his family later moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba, where he met his teenage princess, Alice. After marrying in 1961, the couple moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota where Vern completed his master’s degree, began teaching math, and started a family. In 1967 he began his 37-year career in software engineering at a company that later became Unisys. That career choice became an adventure as the family moved to Iowa, and the couple to Tennessee, New Mexico, New Zealand, Australia, and Sweden. After retiring they moved to Arizona, where Vern had a 15-year “career” golfing five days a week, even in the Arizona summers.
Beginning in November 2020, every 5 weeks for 26 months Vern was lovingly cared for at MD Anderson Cancer Center by the wonderful people in the lab, Dr. Ulrickson, the PAs and NPs, and the staff during his infusions. Gracious thanks to all of them, as well as to the kind and caring staff of Banner Gateway Medical Center who went above and beyond to care for Vern during his last four days on this earth.
Vern is known as a gentleman with a great wit, and his humor and kind disposition was still evident in his final days at the hospital. He will be dearly missed by his many good friends and extended family all over the world.
Honoring his wishes, there will be a virtual Celebration of Life available for viewing online in the coming weeks in lieu of a public service.
