Steve was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Michael J. Breglia and Lillian Nyboe. At the age of six, his family relocated to Arizona in search of a quieter, more family-friendly place where children could grow up surrounded by open spaces.
Steve thrived in school and began his athletic journey while attending St. Catherine’s Elementary School, where he played football, baseball, and basketball. He later attended Brophy College Preparatory in Phoenix, where he continued to excel both academically and athletically. A gifted athlete, Steve earned letters in multiple sports, though football was his true passion. He shined on the field, earning All-State and All-Star honors—moments of great pride for his family, who cherished seeing his accomplishments recognized in the newspaper.
At the age of 19, while attending Phoenix College, Steve’s life took an unexpected turn when he was diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. From that point forward, he faced significant challenges with remarkable strength and resilience.
Despite these struggles, the final years of Steve’s life were marked by stability, comfort, and even joy—especially the last two, which were truly idyllic. He lived in a caring assisted living home in Mesa, where he enjoyed regular outings, daily activities, and morning yoga. He especially appreciated the excellent meals—Steve always had a love of good food.
After several months of illness and hospitalizations, Steve passed away at Banner Baywood Hospital due to acute breathing complications. The doctors and nurses who cared for him were deeply touched by his warmth and personality, quickly falling under his gentle charm.
Steve was an extraordinary person—humble, kind, and never pretentious. He formed friendships across all walks of life, embracing people for who they were. He had a rare ability to accept the challenges he was given and live his life with grace, making the most of each day without complaint.
